Summer Vacation 2011

I have wanted to visit Boston, Massachusetts for many years now. This summer Kevin and I decided that we could make it happen.

I think the first thing we discovered as we drove from the airport in New Hampshire to Boston was that New England is a very beautiful, green area. While in Boston, we spent a whole day taking tours. The old sites of  historical value are surrounded by big modern buildings now. I guess I really had not envisioned that.

We attended the Boston Temple while we were there. The session was in Spanish so we were given earphones.

We left Boston and went to the prophet Joseph Smith's birth place in Sharon, Vermont. Again--astounding rock mountains and trees, trees, trees.

We left the United States for Montreal, Quebec, Canada. What an experience we had there. All of the roads signs were in French. Everyone spoke French and a little bit of English. We firstly got lost trying to find our hotel. The city is huge with several expansion bridges. We got there at rush-hour and spent three hours trying to get over a bridge in which we discovered immediately was wrong. We felt like getting a cardboard sign and writing in French [if we could have]:  Homeless, hungry, can't read your signs or understand what you are saying--HELP!

With some help we finally reached our destination. We attended the Montreal Temple while there. Of course, the session was in French so we had to get earphones again.

We then went back into the United States and drove through Maine. We traveled right through the Bethel-Newry, Maine townships where my Carter-York ancestors joined the Church then left the area for Kirtland, Ohio to be with the Saints. In the cemetery there were the headstones of my ancestors. I believe they were probably the oldest headstones and gravesites of my ancestors that I have ever visited. I really liked this.

Nextly, again left the United States going into New Brunswick. We traveled across the ten-mile Confederation Bridge crossing from New Brunswick onto Prince Edward Island in Canada.

Prince Edward Island was probably our favorite place. We stayed at a bed and breakfast there. Really just the home of an older couple who served us royally. The countryside was so breathtaking and the weather was perfect while we were there.

We left the island for Halifax, Nova Scotia via more forest-lined highways. While in Halifax we went to Pier 21 a museum set up to recognize where everyone came and went from Canada during World War II. A little further up was Pier 2 where those who came into Canada much earlier were received. Our Thompson ancestors possibly came in through this pier.

We were able to attend the Halifax Temple during our visit here. This time the session was all in English. Finally.

We are so grateful to be able to have taken this trip. Heavenly Father and his Son have certainly created a beautiful North American for us to enjoy.
