Last week as I rode the bus into Salt Lake City, the bus driver turned onto State Street. She mentioned that she had just watched a Christmas video from the 1980s filmed on State Street.
A little surprised, I asked, "Are you watching Christmas videos already?" She replied, "Yes, and listening to Christmas music too." For just a second I wondered if I was behind and then realized the date was only the middle of November.
I believe that for most people just thinking about Christmas and the season is a bit magical. Not for everyone, of course, but even those who have never experienced a magical Christmas still seem to dream of one.
Mom always seemed to make Christmastime fun. It was one holiday she really enjoyed. Our home was always decorated with a tree and the type of incidental decorations we looked forward to seeing every Christmas season. There were also lights placed in various places around the home.
I think the part I liked the best about Christmas was listening to the Hi-Fi [high fidellity] stereo play Christmas records. Mom and Dad would play them in the evenings after my siblings and I were in bed since any bounce or bump caused the records to scratch. Not a good thing!
Our home always smelled so good during the holidays because Mom got out her incense. I loved watching the incense smolder with its twisted smoke-filled scent disappearing into a room.
For many weeks before the holidays, we got very excited thinking about what Santa would bring, and Santa was always very generous to us.
I guess it is never too early to think about good Christmas memories!
